Windsurfing in Tenerife

Tenerife, the largest island of the Canaries group lies approximately 200 miles from the coast of North West Africa and enjoys a climate sometimes described as "eternal spring". Dominated by Spain's highest peak, Mount Tiede, the Island has two distinct differences in landscape from the lush green vegetation of the North to the drier sunny South with its characteristic volcanic landscape.

El Medano

El Medano is situated on the southern side of the island about ten to fifteen minutes from the airport and approximately twenty minutes by car from the varied nightlife of Playa de Las Americas. Originally a small Spanish fishing village, renowned for its consistent annual wind record, has developed slowly and comes alive during high season with windsurfers from all over Europe. However, the town still manages to retain an uncommercialised and relaxed atmosphere with bars and restaurants to match together with one of the largest natural beaches on Tenerife.

Windsurfing in the resort takes place in either of two "U" shaped bays which are separated by a point and harbour wall. The Northern bay, often the venue for regular windsurfing magazine test trips, has excellent conditions for the advanced windsurfer produced by the strong North East trade winds and Atlantic rollers. The South bay, however, offers slightly more sheltered conditions for improvers and intermediates with an easier access point by way of the excellent sandy beach. There are two hire centres in the South Bay, Surf Center Playa Sur and The OTC Centre. Also in the south bay there is an excellent kite surfing school with tuition and equipment rental available. Alternative recreational activities in the resort include diving, mountain biking, body/surf board and kayak rental.
