Windsurfing in Gran Canaria
Of all the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria has the greatest variety of scenery,
ranging from sunbaked desert wastes and excellent beaches to quiet sub-tropical
valleys and lush plantations of bananas and coffee. The island also has
the reputation of being the most consistently windy, year round, in the
Canaries.

Bahia Feliz
The
popular windsurfing area of Bahia Feliz, just ten minutes drive from the
busy areas of Playa Del Ingles and San Augustin, is a self contained
resort well suited to families, couples and groups of mixed abilities.
Within the resort is the Club Mistral windsurf centre which caters for all
standards of sailor. The
conditions at Bahia Feliz are more reliable during the winter months as
the wind zone moves inshore and accelerates providing excellent freeride
and freestyle conditions generally in side shore winds from the left. During the summer months, as the wind zone moves
further up the coast, Bahia Feliz offers much gentler conditions, more
suited to beginners. Between the centre and the sea there is a narrow
beach of sand and stones. During low tide the water in front of the centre
is flatter and at high tide it is more choppy with sometimes a small beach
break.
For beginners it is recommended to take part in a windsurfing course. Due
to the challenging conditions sometimes, there are only 3 to 4 pupils per
course, so pupils learn intensively and progress with speed!
There are excursions to Salinas de Arinaga, accompanied by an experienced
windsurf instructor, which are designed for windsurfers who are competent
water-starters and have high wind experience. Here flat water and wind
strengths between 6 and 8 bft are found. Arinaga is a perfect spot
for all classic manoeuvres as well as for new school freestyle. In summer
the excursions are offered up to 6 times per week, which guarantees almost
100% of windsurfing days.
Arinaga is also a very good spot for learning because of the wide shallow
water area in the front. Success in their waterstart lessons is therefore
almost guaranteed plus gybe or other manoeuvres training with an
instructor.
In the winter season they try to organize high wind excursions at short
notice if the wind and weather conditions are favourable. The excursion
fee for this service is 10€ per day or 35€ a week.
For experienced wave freaks there is also the possibility (for a small
fee) to take the equipment to other beaches such as Vargas or Pozo
Izquierdo and windsurf there (at your own risk).
