Fuerteventura
'Peaceful
Island' is a phrase coined to describe Fuerteventura. Released from humdrum
routine, you can freely enjoy the sensation of living in a unique and
fascinating natural setting of space and tranquillity. Miles of golden
sandy beaches and warm crystal clear waters of the Atlantic are qualities
for which Fuerteventura is unrivalled. Second largest of the Canary Islands
and only sixty miles from the African coast, with an average temperature
of 23°C, the Island has almost three thousand hours of sunshine a year.
If you are seeking peace, quiet and restful days, Fuerteventura is an
all year round escape to a new and different environment to tempt you
to return again and again.
Corralejo
Once a quiet fishing village community, Corralejo has developed into
Fuerteventura’s top resort popular with visitors from both UK and Europe.
The main attraction lies in its ten kilometre long white sandy beaches
backed by spectacular dunes, which cover approximately twenty square kilometres
and have been designated a protected area. These magnificent sands are
popular with sun-worshippers, windsurfers and naturists alike. The local
beaches of Galera and Waikiki can be reached on foot or regular buses
or taxis run to the edge of the dunes. Travel further into the dunes by
bike, taxi or bus and a range of watersports including windsurfing and kitesurfing
are to be found.
There
are also facilities for watersports in Corralejo itself available from
the harbour area and the small beaches in town. Windsurfing and diving
are popular and for land based activities the flat terrain around the
resort lends itself to off-road cycling. There are number of boat excursions
from the harbour including a trip to the uninhabited Isla de Lobos just
a few kilometres off the coast and the neighbouring island of Lanzarote
which is only 35 minutes by ferry.
The best shops are to be found in the old town by the port and along
the Avenida del Generalisimo. There is also a market every Monday and
Friday where good of all sorts may be purchased from arts and crafts to
fake designer labels.
Evenings in Corralejo are livelier than elsewhere on the island. The
old town is the place for an atmospheric meal to the accompaniment of
Spanish guitar music or for more up to date sounds there is a good selection
of bars just off the main Avenida.
Villaverde
Situated just 12 kilometres from Corralejo along the main road from
Corralejo to La Oliva this pretty little village still retains its
typically Canarian charm. The surrounding hills are dotted with small
farms and traditionally built houses, some of which have been restored and
enlarged into villas or country houses. The village currently has two
restaurants and a supermarket. Close by there is also an agricultural
museum and opportunities for horse and pony trekking.
Caleta de Fuste
Just a ten minute drive from the airport, Caleta de Fuste has an attractive
horse shoe bay and harbour with marina. The beach is surrounded by a lagoon
which is perfect for families with young children. There are various sports
facilities and marine excursions available including pedaloes, windsurfing,
dive school, yellow submarine and catamaran cruises. There are also a
variety of bars shops and restaurants and banking facilities together
with multi screen cinema and a ten pin bowling alley. Caleta de
Fuste is a very relaxing resort which attracts both couples and families.
For golfers it is ideal as the new 18 hole championship golf course is
only a three minute drive.
The
course is an eighteen hole par 70 with a total length of 6078 metres and
covers the largest green area on Fuerteventura. Venue of the Spanish Open
in 2004, it is the first golf course to be opened on the island. Offering
superb views over the Atlantic and with the combination of lakes and small
streams that come into play on various holes, Fuerteventura has become
a much sought after golf destination for amateurs and professionals alike.
The bar and restaurant complete all the usual facilities associated with
a high quality course. In addition there is a swimming pool, gymnasium,
sauna and of course a good selection of quality villas with private pools
and various apartments surrounding the fairways.
In between golf, the nearby Antigua Commercial Centre is a meeting place
for shopping and leisure pursuits for the holidaymaker and residents alike
with its multi screen cinema complex and restaurants. The main beach of
Caleta de Fuste is two kilometres away and Corralejo, the island’s main
tourist capital, is within a half hour’s drive.
Triquivijate
Triquivijate is right in the centre of Fuerteventura approximately 3 km from Antigua and around 11
kilometres (15 minutes' by car) from Caleta de Fuste and a similar distance from the airport. There are two restaurants in the village, El
Jardin and La Finca. There is also a pizza take-away (surprising for a small village like this) which is open most evenings and which, even more
surprisingly, is a butcher's shop during the day!
Costa Calma
Situated in the south of Fuerteventura, some of the island's best
beaches are found on this part of the coastline with long stretches of
white sand and crystal clear water. The resort has a sophisticated feel to
it with large quality hotels and apartments as well as a good selection of
shops and restaurants. This area is very popular with water sports
enthusiasts with windsurfing and kitesurfing featuring widely. |
