Windsurfing in Fuerteventura

Situated just twenty miles south of Lanzarote and sixty miles from the African coast, Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canaries group, covering some 1078 square miles. The last of the Islands to be developed, it enjoys over 3000 hours of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 23 degrees. Covered by miles of white sand, the beaches are considered to be some of the finest in Europe. The warm crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean coupled with the consistent trade winds and variety of sailing locations makes the island an unparalleled holiday resort for windsurfers of all standards.

Corralejo

Corralejo is the main tourist resort in the North of the Island famous for its white sandy beaches and home of Flag Beach Windsurf Centre situated approximately two kilometres out of town. They have a good selection of up to date equipment from Fanatic and North and cater for all standards. They also offer a variety of windsurfng and kite surfing courses, surfboards, boogie boards and catamaran sailing. Alternatively there is also a small windsurf centre at the end of Galera Beach which is within very easy walking distance of the town centre.

In the summer months the Azores high pressure system is usually well placed to give predictable cross-shore conditions at Flag Beach with flat water inshore and small waves and some swell further out. During the winter the winds are not as consistent as the summer months. However, large swells created by storms in the Atlantic allow for some excellent wave sailing and surfing conditions in this area.

Sotavento - Costa Calma

The unspoiled sands of Playas de Sotavento with their crystal clear waters, spectacular backdrop of volcanic mountains and quality hotels and apartments are home to the famous Rene Egli Pro windsurf centres - Pro Centre I and Pro Centre II.

Rene Egli Pro Centre I is located directly in the Sotavento Wind Funnel zone on a beautiful white beach of sand with crystal-clear turquoise water. Strong and constant wind with water conditions which range from from flat up to waves of six feet are the special features of this World Cup venue. A perfect spot for freestyle, speed sailing and kitesurfing with a great combination and huge range of windsurf/kite boards, rigs and kites available for rental in Premium, World Cup and Sport range (F2, JP and Neil Pryde). A beach bar and reserved sun beds are available in the palm garden right in front of the centre which are protected from the wind.

Rene Egli Pro Centre II is the smaller of the two centres and is 2 miles south of Pro Centre I. It is ideally situated near the large sand dunes and is still within the Sotavento Wind Funnel zone. The centre is located directly at the water’s edge and has a 700m² rental station offering F2, JP and Neil Pryde equipment together with a Spanish-run restaurant. When the tide is right in the waist deep lagoon of Pro Centre II the first steps of the learning process are easily made. The instructors are VDWS approved and courses are held in small groups with special teaching equipment. The spot is equally suitable for beginners and advanced windsurfers. The large shallow lagoon which fills on high water spring tides provides beginners and experienced sailors super-flat water conditions to practice manoeuvres whilst on the sand bars in front of the lagoon free sailors can bump and jump in three to six foot breakers.
